Security cameras and cables worth Rs 10 lakh stolen from Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium, posing potential safety concerns for upcoming Pakistan Super League 2023
The ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2023 is taking place in Karachi and Lahore, with matches scheduled in both cities until the 20th league stage fixture. Lahore is scheduled to host its first fixture on February 26, but the Gaddafi Stadium suffered a setback when security cameras, cables, and batteries worth Rs 10 lakh were stolen before the match. The stadium is set to host four matches during this phase of the tournament. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken notice of the theft and registered a case. The incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of the stadium and the tournament as a whole.
The first match of the season in Lahore between Lahore Qalandars and Peshawar Zalmi will kick off at 7:30 PM IST on February 26. Following this match, the stadium will host Islamabad United, Quetta Gladiators, and Multan Sultans on February 27, March 1, and 4, respectively.
Later in the tournament, Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium will again host the final league stage fixture between Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings on March 12. The stadium will also be the venue for the Qualifier, two Eliminators, and the final of the tournament, which will take place on March 19.
With the theft of security cameras, cables, and batteries, the authorities will need to ensure that adequate security measures are in place for the upcoming matches to ensure the safety and security of players, officials, and fans attending the matches.
Defending champions Lahore Qalandars have started the tournament in good form, currently sitting in 3rd place in the points table with 2 wins from 3 matches. After starting with a one-run win against Multan Sultans in the tournament opener, they suffered a big 67-run defeat in their second game. However, Lahore returned to winning ways by handing a 63-run defeat to Quetta Gladiators in their third match.
Meanwhile, Multan Sultans are currently at the top of the points table with 4 wins from 5 matches, while Babar Azam-led Islamabad United are in 2nd place with 3 wins from 4 matches. Karachi Kings are currently in 5th place, while Quetta Gladiators are in last place.
The tournament is still in its early stages, and there is still plenty of time for teams to improve their performances and move up the points table. It will be interesting to see how the teams perform in the upcoming matches and whether Lahore Qalandars can defend their title.
